At the center of the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a boy named Shepherd. His being was essentially untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His main role was to care for his flock of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the rustling of the wind through the lone tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day in day, guarding his responsibilities imbued in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. On one such day because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plan.
Narratives of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a joke on the villagers.
One afternoon he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” here The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but discovered no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank continued for a couple of more days. However, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
